Description
The arched gateway in the garden wall, located south of West Lavington Manor, dates from the late 16th to early 17th century and is constructed of limestone ashlar. This formal carriage archway features a half-round arch with key and springing blocks, flanked by Tuscan pilasters that support an entablature consisting of a cavetto and fascia architrave, along with a pulvinated frieze that has vertical slots. The structure is topped with a cornice and a small pediment, which includes central and end baluster finials, supported by consoles with scale carvings. The oak gates, likely from the 20th century, have a slatted upper section and a shaped top rail. It is said that the gateway was brought in and rebuilt in its current location.
