Description

WEST LAVINGTON CHURCH STREET SU 0053 (east side) 13/286 Wall to West Lavington Manor 19.3.62 GV II Wall to south garden against road. C16. Greensand rubble with limestone copings, extended in brick. Wall approximately 3.3m high with twice offset and throated roll and hogsback copings, and 2 buttresses, extending 7m from south-west corner of house (q.v.) containing pedestrian gate, to meet arched gate (q.v.), and from arched gate approximately 114m to south stepping down 9 times following line and descent of hill. Continuation of wall at southern end in 34cm brick in mixed bond, cogged band and sloped brickwork to 22cm brick coping. Stone quoins with benchmark, and near south end, a chamfered Tudor arch in stone, with a boarded studded gate set to rebate.
