Description
The Old Reading Room is a cottage dating from the 17th century, with alterations and additions from the 19th and 20th centuries. It is constructed of coursed limestone rubble with ashlar dressings and features a pantiled roof that has a stone-coped gable topped with a low roll finial. The building has a three-bay single-storey front with attics. The central 19th-century rectangular ashlar bay window sits on a plinth and has a three-light mullioned sash window above it, which is set beneath a dentillated cornice and a flat roof. The roof includes two dormers, one with two lights and another with three lights, both from the 20th century, featuring boarded cheeks and flat roofs. To the left of the building is a 20th-century staircase with an openwork wrought iron balustrade.
