Description
Nos. 1 and 2 Main Street are a pair of estate cottages built around 1850 for the Whichcote family of Aswarby Park. The cottages are constructed from coursed squared limestone rubble, featuring ashlar quoins and dressings, and have slate roofs with raised stone coped gables and moulded kneelers. The roofs also include two banks of triple lozenge set ashlar ridge stacks with stepped cornices.
The front of the cottages, which faces the street, is a single storey plus attics with a three-bay layout, where the left bay is gabled. On the ground floor, there are three two-light windows. In the roof, two through eaves dormers with raised stone coped gables and ashlar cheeks contain two-light windows, and there is an additional two-light window to the left. All windows feature chamfered rectangular surrounds, moulded hoods, and chamfered timber mullions.
To the right, there is a gabled porch with a planked door and a chamfered segmental outer arch that bears the Whichcote cypher. The left side front has a pair of two-light windows on the ground floor and a matching pair of two-light through eaves dormers in the roof, along with a gabled porch that matches the one on the street front.
