Description
Nos 3-5 on Main Street are a terrace of estate cottages built in 1845 for the Whichcote family of Aswarby Park. The cottages are constructed from coursed squared limestone rubble, featuring ashlar quoins and dressings, and have slate roofs with raised stone coped gables and moulded kneelers. The roof also includes three banks of ashlar lozenge stacks with stepped cornices.
The building has a single storey plus attics and a seven-bay front, with the middle three bays slightly advanced and gabled. Central double planked half-glazed doors are set in a gabled porch, which has the date 1845 displayed on a rectangular datestone above the door. This is flanked by single light windows, and beyond these are pairs of two-light windows.
On the first floor, there is a central two-light window flanked by pairs of through eaves gabled dormers that feature raised gables, ashlar cheeks, and two-light windows. All windows have chamfered stone surrounds and chamfered timber mullions, with moulded heads only on the ground floor. The central gable displays a shield bearing the Whichcote arms, while attached gabled porches at either end of the block have chamfered segmental outer arches that bear the Whichcote cypher.
