Description
The George Hotel and adjoining shop is a public house and shop located on the north side of High Street in Alford. It dates from the early 18th century and has undergone alterations in the 19th and 20th centuries. The building is constructed of colourwashed brick and features a pantile roof with brick coped gables and kneelers, along with two gable and one ridge stacks. It has an L-shaped plan and stands two storeys high with attics, presenting an eight-bay front arranged in a 5:3 configuration around the corner.
The façade includes a plinth, a first-floor band, and a dentillated eaves course. The central entrance consists of a panelled door with an overlight, set within a 20th-century pedimented wooden doorcase. This door is flanked by pairs of plain sash windows, with five similar windows located above. To the right, there is a blocked doorway and a glazed door at the angle, which is flanked by a four-light shop window with a plain cornice. On the first floor, there are two additional windows and a blocked opening, all of which feature segmental heads. Above the main roof, there are three plain dormers with flat leaded roofs and planked cheeks.
