Description

Hanby Hall is a house built in the early 18th century, with a parapet added and interior modifications made in 1735, along with late 18th-century additions. It was constructed for Sir Richard Hanby. The building features red brick in Flemish bond with rubbed brick dressings and has a deeply hipped plain tiled roof with two ridge stacks. It is designed in an L-shape, with two storeys plus attics and a six-bay front, originally five bays arranged in a 2:1:2 pattern. The central bay is slightly advanced, and the right-hand end bay is a later 18th-century addition.

The façade includes a first-floor eaves band and a panelled parapet. The central entrance has a six-panelled door topped by a late 18th-century traceried fanlight, framed by a fluted wooden Doric surround with a triglyph frieze under the pediment. To the left of the door are two glazing bar sash windows, and to the right are three similar windows. The first floor features six additional sash windows, all with flat rubbed brick arches. The roof is adorned with three glazing bar sash dormers, each with pediments, the central one being segmental. On the right side of the original five-bay front, there is a cast iron rainwater pipe with a fluted hopper dated 1735.

Inside, the hall retains a fine dog leg staircase with three knopped and turned balusters per tread, a moulded handrail, and a carved string, complemented by elaborate fluted newels. The stair hall is fully panelled and features a decorative plaster ceiling. Over the first-floor landing is a Rococo plaster ceiling with an egg and dart cornice. The hall has a diamond flagged stone floor, and the two front rooms also feature full-height panelling.
