Description

Barclays Bank, built in 1906, stands on the east side of Alford Market Place. It is a bank constructed of red brick with ashlar dressings and a slate roof, featuring three rear wall stacks and a deeply dentillated cornice above the first floor. The building is two and a half storeys high, with a four-bay front. A six-panelled door is located on the right side, above a semi-circular headed, rusticated ashlar surround with a keystone and cornice, and featuring a traceried fanlight. To the left of the door are three semi-circular headed margin light windows within moulded ashlar surrounds also incorporating keystones. The first floor has five cross mullioned casement windows with deep segmental heads, using glazing bars. The four tall, through-eaves second floor windows are sash windows with glazing bars; one is tripartite and each is topped by a pedimented slate roof. The building is included in the listing primarily for its group value.
