Description
36-38 and 38A Dolphin Lane is a two-storey building with attics, constructed of red brick and featuring slate and tiled roofs. It has a rectangular plan and includes a single-storey section attached to the north gable end.
The exterior showcases a ground-floor shop front with plate glass windows facing south towards Dolphin Lane and east towards Pump Square, with the shop entrance located at the corner of the building. Above the fascia, a reeded cornice curves around the corner above the door, and a reeded band with corner roundels frames the fascia and the two plate-glass windows. This decorative detail extends beyond the window to the west. Above the shop window on the south side, there are two four-paned sash windows set under flat arches. The east elevation features a similar window above the shop front, alongside an unhorned sash window with six panes over one and margin lights, as well as a tall unhorned sash window, also with margin lights. These three windows are topped with wide-splayed flat arches. The ground floor of this elevation includes a modern bow window with glazing bars, next to which is a door with an overlight and a reeded door frame with corner roundels, providing access to a small shop and the staircase to the upper floors.
Inside, the main two-storey building contains two shops at ground-floor level, with accommodation above. The entrance to the small shop on the east side opens almost directly onto a narrow enclosed staircase. To the left of the stair is a room at mezzanine level, which features a ceiling that rises sharply to accommodate a tall window with margin lights that reaches the eaves. South of the first-floor landing, a short corridor beside a substantial chimney stack leads to the main front room that overlooks Dolphin Lane. To the north of the landing, a short flight of steps leads to two attic rooms above the mezzanine-level room. No historic joinery or other details remain.
