Description

Red Lion House is a building that includes two shops and a house, constructed in three storeys with three bays. The front is pebble-dashed and painted cream, featuring smooth-rendered rusticated quoins and plain architraves, topped with a slate roof and end stacks. The lower storey is prominently designed, with a central entrance to the house flanked by shop fronts, all framed by fluted pilasters, a fascia with end brackets for each shop, and a moulded cornice.

The left-hand shop retains original features, including cast-iron grilles on plain stall risers, plate glass windows with slender colonnettes, and supporting brackets adorned with sunburst fluting. Its recessed entrance has a panelled soffit, a glazed door with a lower panel, and an overlight. The right-hand shop front, which is later, features a splayed window on a mosaic stall riser, with a recessed glazed door and overlight on the right. The tripartite shop window has wooden mullions and a transom.

On the first floor, there are oriel windows on the right and left, with a narrower central window set in an eared architrave. All these windows have T-shaped windows inserted into the original openings. The second floor features similar windows inserted in gabled openings on the right and left, with moulded brick finials on the gables, and a replacement two-light window with a sill band in the centre.

On the right gable end, the first and second floors have replacement windows on the left side, set in original eared architraves. The rear of the building is constructed of rubble stone at the basement and lower storey, with brick and timber-framed partition walls above, where the shadow of the gable of a former building facing Lancaster Square is still visible. The building has not been inspected.
