Description
The Fountain and statue of Llewelyn ap Iowerth is a notable sculpture set on a pedestal within an octagonal fountain basin. The basin is made of Penmon freestone and features fielded panels of pecked stone. An inscription on the coping reads: 'Llewelyn ab Iorwerth Founder of Conwy Abbey AD 1184'. On the east side, a bronze plate is inscribed: 'The Corporation of Conway engrave this plate to record their gratitude for this fountain presented to the town by Albert Wood DL JP of Bodlondeb (a former Mayor of the Borough). Charles J Wallace Mayor 1898'.
At the center of the fountain is a square plinth made of Penmon stone, which includes two cast-iron dragon spouts, along with a column base crafted from the same stone. The main fluted column is made of Grinshill red sandstone and is adorned with a garland. The Corinthian capital is painted bronze. Atop the column stands a full-length bronze figure of Llewelyn, depicted in armor and a coronet, holding a sword and shield.
