Description

HSBC Bank is a single-storey building constructed in the inter-war free-classical style. The walls are made of pale grey snecked rock-faced stone, set on a plinth of larger coursed rock-faced blocks, with Bathstone freestone dressings. The steep hipped roof is covered with graded slates and features a freestone parapet balustrade above a moulded eaves cornice.

The entrance, located at a splayed corner, is framed by an ashlar surround. It includes full-height tapering Tuscan pilasters and simpler inner pilasters that support recessed double fielded-panel doors, topped by a keyed round arch with a metal radial-glazed fanlight. The entablature above has disc ornamentation over the main pilasters and a billet frieze below the cornice. The corner parapet features a raised field below a shallow plain pediment.

On the left side wall facing Rosemary Lane, there are three arcaded round-headed windows with keystones and a linked hood mould, featuring steel-framed margin-lit glazing. The shorter right side wall facing Lancaster Square has paired similar windows, with the left-hand window containing a deposit box in the sill and the right-hand window housing a cash dispenser at sill level. A freestone band beneath the eaves on both elevations displays a modern bank sign, and an attached cast-iron street sign is located at the corner of the Rosemary Lane elevation.

Set slightly back at the end of the Rosemary Lane elevation is a lower one-storey wing made of snecked rock-faced stone, topped with a hipped roof of graded slates and a rock-faced stone stack. This wing features a three-light mullioned and transomed window. Further along, the elevation connects to a yard wall that includes a boarded door.

Inside, the banking hall is characterized by a ceiling with a plaster dentil cornice.
