Description
40 High Street is a two-storey building featuring a two-window shop front. The exterior is rendered over local brick with a slate roof and small rectangular brick chimneys at each end. The second floor has two almost square windows fitted with six-pane hornless sash glazing and stone sills. The first floor contains two twelve-pane hornless sash windows. On the ground floor, to the left, there is a round-headed doorway with an overlight and a modern door. To the right, there is a later 19th-century shopfront with a central door that is partly glazed and has an overlight, flanked by shop windows on either side. The window frames have colonettes that support round-headed arches, with two arches for each front and one for the door recess. The shopfront features classically derived pilasters at the ends, which support volutes and an entablature with a cornice above.
The gable end to the right has two windows on each floor. The second floor features broad-proportioned eight-pane hornless sash windows, while the first floor has sixteen-pane hornless sash windows. The ground floor has replacement glazing that respects the original openings. At the rear, there is a two-storey wing, which is known to have been five cottages around 1670. The timber framing is visible in the gable, with some exposed square panels, while the walls are generally rendered.
