Description

Freemasons' Hall is a Masonic hall built between 1860 and 1863, with internal alterations made in the 20th century. It features gault brick and ashlar construction, a Welsh slate roof, and plain red brick on the sides and rear. The building is designed in the Egyptian Revival style.

The exterior has steeply battered sides with roll-moulded ashlar quoins, leading up to a wide curved ashlar cornice that is carved with the winged disc of the sun supported by asps. There is a small parapet set back from the front. Two large central drum columns made of ashlar are present, with bases carved with leaves and shafts inscribed with hieroglyphics, while the capitals are adorned with palmettes. An inscription in Egyptian hieroglyphics on the entablature commemorates the building's construction in the 23rd year of Queen Victoria's reign, wishing for its prosperity. Behind the open front, there is a steeply battered doorway with a stone surround, topped by a winged sun and a Greek inscription that reads "Know Myself."

Inside, the entrance hall, kitchen, and banquet room on the ground floor have been completely remodeled in the 20th century. However, the first-floor lodge room retains decorations featuring Masonic symbols, including the winged globe, scarabeus, lotus, triangle of light, and the disc of the sun. The hall was built as a replica of the Temple of Dandour in Nubia.
