Description

This memorial, located in the forecourt of the Baptist Chapel, was erected around 1880. It is made of pink granite and sits on a stone plinth with a circular brick base. The memorial takes the form of an obelisk with a stepped plinth. It is inscribed with the following text: "In memory of Rev. Thomas Matthews, 31 years pastor of Baptist Church, erected by his friends and fellow townsmen in token of their admiration of his eminent talents and exalted character. Born August 1798, died Jan 21st 1871."
