Description
The Matthews memorial is a pedestal tomb located approximately 9 metres south of the nave of the Church of Saint Chad, dated 1815. It is constructed from grey sandstone ashlar and features a moulded plinth, recessed side panels with reeded architrave on the sides and top, a fluted frieze, a moulded cornice, and a large urn finial adorned with husk swags and fluted lower parts. The top of the finial was missing at the time of the survey in January 1987. The western panel is inscribed with the following text: "ERECTED / TO THE SACRED / Memory of the Late / THOMAS MATTHEWS / of the Lea Hall in this / COUNTY / who departed this life / December 15th 1815 in / the 70th Year of His Age". There are additional inscriptions dedicated to members of the Matthews family.
