MONTFORD C.P. MONTFORD SJ 41 SW 9/148 Matthews memorial approx. - 9 metres to south of nave of Church of Saint Chad

GV II

Pedestal tomb. Dated 1815. Grey sandstone ashlar. Moulded plinth, recessed side panels, each with reeded architrave to sides and top, fluted frieze, moulded cornice, and large urn finial with husk swags and fluted lower parts (top of finial missing at time of survey - January 1987) . Western panel inscribed: "ERECTED / TO THE SACRED / Memory of the Late / THOMAS MATTHEWS / of the Lea Hall in this / COUNTY / who departed this life / December 15th 1815 in / the 70th Year of His Age". Further inscriptions to members of the Matthews family.
