Description
The Ford War Memorial is a churchyard monument designed by Nicholson and Clarke of Cathedral Chambers, Hereford in December 1919, and it was unveiled and dedicated in July 1920.
Constructed from limestone, the memorial is situated on a sloping site that is leveled by a domed platform. Above this platform is a stepped octagonal plinth. The base of the monument is square, while the shaft and arms of the cross are octagonal.
The cross head features cusps on its arms and has a moulded band around its neck. The shaft is gently tapered and has broaches at the bottom, where it rises from the square base. The east front of the base is inscribed with the words: ‘TO THE GLORIOUS MEMORY / OF THE MEN FROM THIS PARISH / WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR KING AND COUNTRY / IN THE GREAT WAR / 1914 -1919 / THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE’. Additional names are inscribed on the sides of the base. The upper step of the plinth carries the inscription ‘IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF THOSE WHO MADE THE / SUPREME SACRIFICE IN WORLD WAR 1939 – 1945’, with names recorded below.
