Description
The Round House is a toll house that has been converted into a residential property. It was built in the late 18th century or early 19th century, with an addition made in the mid to late 19th century. The building is constructed from painted sandstone ashlar and features a pyramidal slate roof. The later brick addition is painted and also has a slate roof. The structure has an octagonal plan, with corner pilaster strips and an integral brick lateral stack on the north side. It has small square and rectangular windows, some of which are blind, while others feature 20th-century leading. The central entrance has a door with six raised and fielded panels, and there is a late 20th-century gabled brick porch with leaded windows. To the right, there is a one-storey addition that includes an integral brick end stack and a segmental-headed two-light wooden casement window at the front. The interior has not been inspected. The toll house is situated alongside the Holyhead Road at the north-west end of Montford Bridge, which was constructed in 1792 by Thomas Telford. The toll house likely dates from this period or is part of the improvements made to Telford's Holyhead Road after 1817.
