Description
The Baptist Chapel and Schoolroom, built in 1837 with alterations in 1841 and 1853, and an added schoolroom from 1864, is located on High Street in Boston. It is constructed of gault brick with painted ashlar dressings, red brick at the rear and in the schoolroom, and features Welsh slate roofs. The building is designed in the Gothick style, characterized by a dogtooth cornice and a plain parapet with a small stone plinth.
The exterior is two stories tall with a symmetrical five-bay front, where each bay is defined by stepped buttresses topped with plain pinnacles. The central three bays are under one large gable, which is slightly broken forward, while the flanking bays are lower and individually gabled. The central bay features a three-light glazing bar window with a dripmould above a tall three-light window that has a pointed head and intersecting tracery, along with a sill band and dripmould. In the gable, there is a small arched opening and a datestone marking the year 1837. On either side, there are small projecting gabled porches with panelled double doors set in arched openings, each with a dripmould.
The flanking wings contain pairs of pointed doorways with arches above. Each of the four outer bays has a two-light arched Gothick window with glazing bars and a dripmould. The returns of the building are made of red brick and consist of three bays with full-height pilasters. The ground floor features three glazing bar casements with segmental heads, while the upper floor has three similar windows with Gothick lights and arches.
The rear schoolroom is two stories high, constructed of red brick, and has three-light casements. Inside, the chapel features a gallery around all four sides supported by slender cast-iron piers, with panelled sides and raked seats. The preacher's stall is situated on a platform, adorned with decorative cast-iron balusters, a wreathed handrail, and decorative turned newels.
