Description
No. 114 High Street is a house that has been converted into a shop and flats, dating from the late 18th century. It is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond with ashlar dressings and features a slate roof.
The building has three storeys and a three-bay front, with a stone plinth, a stone band at the first floor, and stone coping on the parapet. On the right side, there is a six-panel door with glazed upper panels and a fanlight above it. To the left, there are two plain sash windows with semicircular heads. The ground floor openings are set within semicircular headed recesses, while the upper floors have plain sashes with flat brick wedge lintels, and the windows on the second floor are smaller.
Inside, the building retains a turned baluster staircase. Historically, it was shown as "Bank" on John Wood's plan of 1826 and may have been used as a bank in conjunction with the adjacent No. 116, which was the home of William Garfit, the founder of Garfit's Bank established in 1754.
