Description

The Bardon Hill War Memorial is a war memorial unveiled in 1920, dedicated to those who fell in the First and Second World Wars. It features a tall Portland stone wheel-cross, which displays the Sword of Sacrifice on its front (west) side. This cross is supported by a square plinth with chamfered corners, and each side of the plinth has inscribed slate plaques. The cross and plinth sit on a square base made of local Bardon granite, with each of the four sides slightly angled.

On the front (west) side of the plinth, the inscription reads: ‘TO THE GLORY OF / GOD AND IN / MEMORY OF THE / MEN OF THIS / PARISH WHO GAVE / THEIR LIVES FOR / THEIR COUNTRY / IN THE GREAT WAR / 1914-1919’. The base bears the inscription: ‘THEIR NAME LIVETH / FOR EVERMORE’. The names of 31 individuals who died in the First World War (1914-18) are inscribed on the north and south sides of the plinth. The rear side of the plinth includes the inscription: ‘THIS TABLET / PERPETUATES THE MEMORY / OF THOSE WHO GAVE THEIR / LIVES IN THE WORLD WAR / 1939-1945 / [ FOUR NAMES] / WE WILL REMEMBER THEM’.

The memorial is located within the churchyard of the Church of St Peter, which is also listed at Grade II, and it stands approximately 10 metres south-east of the church. The memorial is enclosed at the back by a semi-circular hedge.
