Description
Strumpshaw War Memorial is a First World War memorial, erected around 1920, with additions for the Second World War. It is made of rock-faced granite and is located in the churchyard of the Church of St Peter, approximately 3.6 meters to the north-west of the church's north porch. The memorial features a rock-faced Celtic wheel-head cross, which has a relief carving of the Sword of Sacrifice on its main north face. It stands on a trapezoidal plinth that is set on a single-step stone base.
After the Second World War, a small granite tablet was added at the base of the memorial to honor local men who died in that conflict. The dedication for the First World War is inscribed in leaded lettering on the dressed surface of the plinth's north face, stating: 'IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF THOSE/ FROM THIS PARISH WHO GAVE THEIR/ LIVES FOR THEIR GOD AND COUNTRY/ IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 18/ (NAMES)/ THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE’. The Second World War dedication is on a separate rectangular tablet at the foot of the plinth, reading ‘1939 – 45/ [NAMES]’.
