Description

The courtyard to the north-west of Strumpshaw Old Hall includes a former kitchen, stable block, and boundary wall, dating from the 18th and 19th centuries. The structures are built of red brick and feature hipped roofs covered with slate and pantiles. The stable block and coach house are located on the north side and have a hipped slate roof. They include two pairs of centrally located double door openings, along with secondary door and window openings that have semi-circular heads. The windows are tripartite casements with glazing bars, and there is one blind opening at the south-west corner. The buildings have brick dentil eaves and a central clock cupola topped with an ogee lead-covered dome on turned balusters. The stables to the south have a steep hipped roof made of black glazed pantiles, with alternating door and window openings that also feature semi-circular heads and tripartite casements with glazing bars. The former kitchen has a gabled pantiled roof and a ground floor sash window with glazing bars in the south gable, along with a chimney stack located east of the ridge line. The interior of the kitchen contains a large oven, fireplace, and intact copper, with a drainage channel across the floor. The buildings are connected by a red brick boundary wall that has half-round coping. This site is included for its group value.
