Description
The Old Hall is a country house dated 1646, built by John Stubbe. It underwent alterations in the 18th century, including re-roofing and raising of the eaves line. The building is constructed of flint with red brick dressings and has a smut pantile roof. It stands three storeys tall, with the principal facade facing north and featuring nine symmetrical bays. The windows are sashes with glazing bars and architraves, with ground floor openings that are pedimented and first and second floor openings that have segmental heads. A central six-panelled door is framed by a classical doorcase, and a datestone from 1646 is located between the first floor windows. All second floor windows are blind, except for a wider, central tripartite sash with an elliptical head and radiating glazing bars. The building has a modillion eaves cornice and coped, parapeted gables with internal chimney stacks. The west gable shows remnants of red brick diaper-work and the line of an earlier, steeper roof, along with one blocked staircase window. An attic casement window features leaded glazing and a segmental head.
There are later lean-to extensions to the west and south, as well as an 18th century red brick addition to the south. Inside, there is an 18th century staircase with carved tread-ends and a swept handrail, along with some notable late 17th and early 18th century detailing, including fireplaces and ground floor internal doorways with semi-circular heads and classical detailing.
