Description

The Church of St Peter is a parish church primarily dating from the 14th century, with the tower possibly being older. It is constructed of flint with limestone dressings and features a slate roof covering the nave, chancel, and south porch. The unbuttressed west tower has two-light bell openings with restored cusped tracery and a two-light Decorated west window. On the south side, there is a small double-opening under a square label-mould. The church has an embattled parapet with corner pinnacles and two two-light Perpendicular windows separated by a staged buttress in the south wall of the nave. The arches over the window openings are formed with alternate brick and flint voussoirs. The south wall of the chancel contains two two-light windows with 'Y' tracery and a priest's door with plain hood mould stops. The east wall of the chancel has a three-light Perpendicular window and has been largely rebuilt in brick, featuring tie irons shaped like the letters 'E G'. There is also a three-light Perpendicular window in the north nave. The walls of the nave and chancel show many stone-lined putlog holes. Inside, the nave roof is collarless and arch-braced, with hollow chamfered principals and a ridge, while the chancel has a modern plastered ceiling. A wall painting depicting St. Christopher can be found on the north wall of the nave. The church features a plain octagonal font supported by eight pilasters and a central stem, along with a blocked north doorway. A 17th-century turned baluster communion rail and 15th-century benches in the chancel, which have poppy-head ends and figure carvings on the armrests, add to the interior's historical significance. Additionally, there is an ogee-headed piscina in the southeast corner of the chancel.
