Description

Nos. 11 and 13 on Main Street are two cottages dating from the 17th and 18th centuries, with a wing added around 1800. They are built from red brick with granite rubblestone and remnants of timber framing. The cottages have a 20th-century plain tile roof featuring a rebuilt central ridge and stacks at the right gable end.

The two-storey range has a series of casement windows, with a stone cross wing at the right end, which faces gable. No. 11 is located on the right and has a door with a 2-light casement window above, along with 3-light casement windows on both floors to the right. There are remnants of timber framing here, with some brick nogging that has been renewed. The gable features a renewed 3-light casement window with top lights, and a mullion and transom window above, plus an attic 2-light casement. The wing has cambered lintels and a restored gable with renewed shouldered brick coping.

No. 13 has a door on the left, accompanied by two 3-light casement windows and a 2-light casement window above. It also includes casements, doors, and an outshut at the rear. Inside No. 11, there are visible beams, an inglenook, and a pair of cruck blades. The cottages have group value with Nos. 9 and 15. No. 11 is likely the 'Rose Cottage' mentioned in Webster V.R., Cruck Framed Buildings of Leicestershire, Transactions L.A.S., Vol. xxx (1954) P.28.
