Description
Gable Cottage is a cottage dating from the 16th or early 17th century. It features square panelled timber framing with herringbone and other red brick nogging, along with a part granite and slate rubble stone plinth and walling. The roof is covered with Swithland slate, which has been rebuilt at the ridge and end stacks.
The building has two storeys on the left side with a gable facing, one storey in the centre, and one and a half storeys on the right side, also gable facing. The left gable has four by four panels and includes two 2-light casements on the first floor, along with casements at the left end. The return features three panels with a 5-light casement and a 2-light casement above. There is a diagonal 2-light casement in the corner. The centre has five panels and a door, with a 1-light and a 3-light casement and a dormer above. The right gable has three panels with a 3-light casement in the attic.
At the rear, there are doors and casements, with part of the stone walling and part of a cruck frame visible. Inside, the cottage features chamfered beams and massive rafters. Gable Cottage is an exceptionally picturesque, well-preserved, and unrestored example of local architecture from its time.
