Description
The pillar fountain, located adjacent to the south-east corner of Willowbrook Cottage in Ticknall, was manufactured by Glenfield and Kennedy Ltd of Kilmarnock and erected in 1914 at the instruction of Sir Vauncey Harpur-Crewe of Calke Abbey. This fountain features a fluted cast iron cylindrical column topped with a moulded dome. It includes a tap lever handle, a lion mask surrounding the tap outlet, and an integral bucket platform at the base. The design, known as Kennedy's patent, is a late 19th-century creation that is self-closing and anti-freezing. This fountain is part of a fresh water supply system for the village of Ticknall, which is part of the Harpur-Crewe estate, and is one of 16 surviving examples. The fountains were supplied with water by gravity from a reservoir filled by a well, which was pumped by wind power.
