Description

The pillar fountain, located opposite Nos 55 and 57 on Main Street in Ticknall, was manufactured by Glenfield and Kennedy Ltd of Kilmarnock and erected in 1914 under the direction of Sir Vauncey Harpur-Crewe of Calke Abbey. It features a fluted cast iron cylindrical column topped with a moulded dome. The design includes a tap lever handle, a lion mask surrounding the tap outlet, and an integral bucket platform at the base. This fountain is known as Kennedy's patent, self-closing, anti-freezing pillar fountain, a design that dates back to the late 19th century. It is part of a fresh water supply system for the village of Ticknall, which is part of the Harpur-Crewe estate, and is one of 16 similar fountains that remain. These fountains were supplied by gravity from a reservoir filled with water drawn from a well by a wind-pump.
