Description

The pillar fountain located in front of No 38 on Main Street in Ticknall was manufactured by Glenfield and Kennedy Ltd of Kilmarnock and erected in 1914 under the instruction of Sir Vauncey Harpur-Crewe of Calke Abbey. It features a fluted cast iron cylindrical column with a moulded domed top, which includes a tap lever handle, a lion mask surround to the tap outlet, and an integral bucket platform at the base. The design, known as Kennedy's patent, is a self-closing, anti-freezing pillar fountain that dates back to the late 19th century. This fountain is part of a fresh water supply system for the village of Ticknall, which is part of the Harpur-Crewe estate, and there are 16 other similar examples still in existence. The fountains are supplied by gravity from a reservoir filled with water drawn from a well using a wind-pump.
