Description

The pillar fountain located in front of No 33 on Ticknall Main Street was manufactured by Glenfield and Kennedy Ltd of Kilmarnock and erected in 1914 under the instruction of Sir Vauncey Harpur-Crewe of Calke Abbey. It features a fluted cast iron cylindrical column with a moulded domed top, which includes a tap lever handle, a lion mask surround at the tap outlet, and an integral bucket platform at the base. The design, known as Kennedy's patent, is a self-closing, anti-freezing pillar fountain that dates from the late 19th century. This fountain is part of a fresh water supply system for the village of Ticknall, which is part of the Harpur-Crewe estate, and there are 16 other similar examples that still exist. The fountains were supplied with water by gravity from a reservoir that was filled from a well using a wind-pump.
