Description
The pillar fountain, located opposite No. 145 Main Street in Ticknall, was manufactured by Glenfield and Kennedy Ltd of Kilmarnock and erected in 1914 under the direction of Sir Vauncey Harpur-Crewe of Calke Abbey. It features a fluted cast iron cylindrical column topped with a moulded dome. The fountain includes a tap lever handle, a lion mask surrounding the tap outlet, and an integral bucket platform at the base. This design, known as Kennedy's patent, is a self-closing, anti-freezing pillar fountain that dates back to the late 19th century. It is part of a fresh water supply system for the village of Ticknall, which is part of the Harpur-Crewe estate, and there are 16 other similar examples still in existence. The fountains were supplied with water by gravity from a reservoir filled by a well using a wind-pump.
