Description

The pillar fountain, located opposite Arch Farmhouse on Main Street in Ticknall, was manufactured by Glenfield and Kennedy Ltd of Kilmarnock and erected in 1914 under the direction of Sir Vauncey Harpur-Crewe of Calke Abbey. It features a fluted cast iron cylindrical column topped with a moulded dome. The fountain includes a tap lever handle, a lion mask surrounding the tap outlet, and an integral bucket platform at the base. The design, known as Kennedy's patent, is a self-closing, anti-freezing pillar fountain that dates back to the late 19th century. This fountain is part of a fresh water supply system for the village of Ticknall, which is part of the Harpur-Crewe estate, and is one of 16 similar fountains that still exist. The fountains were supplied with water by gravity from a reservoir filled by a wind-pump drawing from a well.
