Description

The Entrance Lodge and Gateway to Calke Abbey is a lodge built around 1805 by William Wilkins Senior. It is constructed of rendered brick and ashlar, topped with a hipped Welsh slate roof that features a rendered ridge stack. The building stands two storeys tall, with a canted end facing the drive. The ground floor has three glazing bar sash windows, while a smaller glazing bar sash is positioned above, flanked by blind openings. On the north side, there is a flat-roofed porch that is open on two sides, supported by round arches with impost bands, and has a matching blind arch on the rear wall. The porch features a raised and fielded panelled door. To the east, there is a lower wing with 2-light casement windows.

Attached to the northwest is a wall and gateway. The gateway includes two round-arched pedestrian entrances made of ashlar, adorned with a moulded cornice and attic moulding. Each arch contains a single wrought iron gate with stick rail design and latticework piers. Between the two arches, there is a pair of similar gates featuring curved braces and matching latticework piers. This lodge was built as a gate lodge for Sir Henry Harpur, serving Calke Abbey.
