Description
The pillar fountain, located south-east of 'The Green' in Ticknall, was manufactured by Glenfield and Kennedy Ltd of Kilmarnock and erected in 1914 under the direction of Sir Vauncey Harpur-Crewe of Calke Abbey. It features a fluted cast iron cylindrical column topped with a moulded dome. The design includes a tap lever handle, a lion mask surrounding the tap outlet, and an integral bucket platform at the base. This fountain is known as Kennedy's patent, self-closing, anti-freezing pillar fountain, a design that dates back to the late 19th century. It is part of a fresh water supply system for the village of Ticknall, which is associated with the Harpur-Crewe estate, and there are 16 other similar fountains that still exist. These fountains were supplied with water by gravity from a reservoir filled by a well using a wind-pump.
