Description
The pillar fountain located in front of No 24 on Ashby Road in Ticknall is a Grade II listed structure. It was manufactured by Glenfield and Kennedy Ltd of Kilmarnock and erected in 1914 under the direction of Sir Vauncey Harpur-Crewe of Calke Abbey. This fountain features a fluted cast iron cylindrical column topped with a moulded dome. It includes a tap lever handle, a lion mask surround at the tap outlet, and an integral bucket platform at the base. The design, known as Kennedy's patent, is a self-closing, anti-freezing pillar fountain that dates back to the late 19th century. This fountain is part of a fresh water supply system for the village of Ticknall, which is part of the Harpur-Crewe estate, and is one of 16 similar examples that still exist. The fountains were supplied with water by gravity from a reservoir, which was filled by water drawn from a well using a wind-pump.
