Description
The pillar fountain, located 30 metres east of Hayes Farmhouse, was manufactured by Glenfield and Kennedy Ltd of Kilmarnock and erected in 1914 under the direction of Sir Vauncey Harpur-Crewe of Calke Abbey. It features a fluted cast iron cylindrical column topped with a moulded dome. The design includes a tap lever handle, a lion mask surrounding the tap outlet, and an integral bucket platform at the base. This fountain, known as Kennedy's patent, self-closing, anti-freezing pillar fountain, is part of a fresh water supply system for the village of Ticknall, which is part of the Harpur-Crewe estate. There are 16 other similar fountains that still exist, and they were supplied with water by gravity from a reservoir filled by a wind-pump drawing from a well.
