Description
This is a farm outbuilding located 20 metres north-west of Commonside Farmhouse in Eckington. It dates from the late 18th century and has undergone alterations in the 19th and 20th centuries. The building is constructed from coursed squared coal measures sandstone, featuring quoins, plain gables with brick stacks, and a stone slated roof.
The north elevation has two storeys and a single bay. On the ground floor, there is a 2-light flush mullioned window with glazing bar casements, alongside a 20th-century 2-light window in a plain opening. The first floor features a tall loading doorway with a massive ashlar surround and lintel, leading to plain planked double doors. The south elevation includes an external stone staircase that leads to a first-floor doorway, a 2-light flush mullioned window, and a single doorway with a massive surround and a plain plank door.
Historically, the parish of Eckington was a significant centre for agricultural edge tool manufacture from the 16th to the 19th centuries. Commonside Farm, which includes this outbuilding, is noted as Commonside Manufactury (Sickle) on the 1875 edition of the Ordnance Survey map. No other buildings associated with Commonside Farm are listed.
