Description

The war memorial in Chapel-en-le-Frith was built in 1919 and is made of gritstone, featuring wrought iron posts and chains. It stands on four steps leading up to a square pier, which has a shallow plinth at the bottom and a simple coved cornice at the top. Each corner of the pier is supported by diagonal buttresses that extend to its full height, which are stepped and curved near the top. Acanthus leaf brackets adorn the tops of these buttresses. The sides of the pier are inscribed with the names of the fallen. The memorial has a domed top that is decorated with acanthus leaves and roundels. Just below the dome, there is a base with chamfered corners that reads, "Erected 1919 to record the honoured names of the men from the Parish of Chapel-en-le-Frith who served in the Great War." Surrounding the memorial are railings hung on four iron columns, which are composed of wrought iron bars with scroll bases and tops.
