Description

The former Williams and Glynn's Bank, located at No 9 Market Street in Chapel-en-le-Frith, is a bank building dating from the 19th century, with a refronting from the early 20th century. The ground floor is constructed of gritstone ashlar, while the upper part is made of coursed rubble. It features a stone slate roof and stone gable end stacks. The building stands two storeys tall with irregular fenestration.

The ground floor showcases an Art Nouveau style. To the east, there is a deeply recessed doorcase with chamfered sides that transition to a moulding halfway up, topped by stylised leaf and flower carvings. Above the door, a lintel is inscribed with 'William Deacon's Bank'. On either side of the door, there are mouldings with a central rib, which are coved on either side and splayed at the base. The central ribs serve as trunks for the flower and foliage carvings above on a large ovolo moulded stringcourse. Below the door is a panelled wooden door.

To the west, there are four windows, each featuring deeply moulded architraves and keystones. Below each window, there is a recessed panel decorated with a diamond pattern. Each window contains a single pane of glass with applied patterned leading. Above these windows, the stringcourse continues from over the door, adorned with similar carved details between each window. There are also two 20th-century windows above. On the eastern gable wall, there is a large metal plaque inscribed with 'Bank', designed in a similar style.

This building is included for its group value.
