Description
The Moravian Chapel, built in 1751, is a significant building located in the Moravian Settlement in Ockbrook. It features red brick construction with gauged brick and painted ashlar dressings, a painted stone plinth, and a plain band over the windows, along with a moulded stone cornice. The chapel has a slate roof with stone copings, two unusual circular vents at the ridge, and a central pediment topped with a painted wooden square cupola. This cupola is adorned with semi-circular headed arches on each side, a balustrade at the base, and colonnettes at each corner, supporting an ogival leaded roof with a ball finial and weather-vane.
The building is single-storey with five bays, and the main elevation features three large semi-circular headed windows with stone imposts, keystones, and margin light glazing bar sashes. On either side, there are wide semi-circular headed doorcases, also with stone imposts and keystones, leading to double panelled doors and divided fanlights. Above each door, there is a glazing bar sash under a segment head with a stone keystone. Centrally located in the pediment is a black clockface that was added in 1827.
Inside, the chapel is plain, featuring a raised and fielded panelled gallery supported by fluted iron columns on the north side, along with a ceiling rose and cornice. The interior arrangements were altered in the 19th century, including the relocation of the original 18th-century pulpit, which has a panelled and pedimented back panel, to the south wall, and the insertion of 19th-century pews.
