Description

Nos 16 and 18 on The Settlement is a former school house, now divided into two houses, built in 1798 with later 19th and 20th century alterations. It was constructed as part of the Moravian Settlement. The building is made of red brick with brick and stone detailing, topped with a steeply pitched slate roof featuring brick coped gables to the south and brick gable stacks, along with a plain eaves band.

The structure has three storeys and three bays. In the center, there is a two-storey advanced bay with a full-height blind semi-circular arch, which includes raised stone impost blocks and a keyblock. The lower part of the arch is filled with 20th century brickwork, featuring a 20th century panelled door with a divided overlight in the center, and a small fixed pane window to the north. The south side of the bay has a blocked flat arched opening, partly filled by a margin light window, while the north side has a 20th century doorcase set in a blocked semi-circular opening.

To the north, there is a pair of adjoining late 19th century plain sash windows with a central stone mullion under a wedge stone lintel. To the south, there is a plain sash window in the original segment-headed opening with a stone keyblock. Above, there are similar openings with glazing bar sashes on either side of the central bay, and a segment-headed glazing bar sash in the central bay. Between the central bay and the southern sash is a thin 20th century glazing bar sash. Above this, there are three 2-light glazing bar casements located below the eaves.

Inside No 16, the original stick baluster staircase remains, and both houses feature segmental barrel vaulted plaster ceilings on the top storey.
