Description
The canal bridge, built in 1779 by engineer John Varley, is located on Mill Lane in Sandiacre. It is constructed of ashlar and cast iron. This single-span bridge features stone walls at both ends, with a cast iron arch in between. The cast iron section consists of a grid of bolted beams, which originally had wooden decking but now has tarmac. The beams are slightly canted on either side and curve downwards against the stone walls, which are equipped with iron handrails. At each end, there are pairs of curving stone walls that terminate in plain columns, and each wall has a plain band at the base of the parapets. This bridge was built as part of the Erewash Canal.
