Description
The steps and gates to the vegetable garden at Hopton Hall date from the late 18th century and are made of dressed gritstone. The structure includes eleven steps that are six feet wide. At the top of the steps, there are two plain circular pillars featuring simplified classical decoration, topped with ball finials. The pillars have moulded capitals and a frieze with fluted and gabled decoration. At the base of the steps, there are the remains of two similar gate piers, with only the top two feet of decoration surviving, which also feature ball finials. These elements have been removed from their original position at the north front of the Hall.
