Description
Dene Cottage is a cottage that was formerly a tollhouse, dating from the late 18th century to early 19th century. It is constructed from coursed gritstone rubble with gritstone dressings and features a plain tile roof with a leaded ridge. The building has a large central brick chimney stack, stone copings, and moulded kneelers.
The cottage is two storeys on the northwest side and single storey on the roadside, which is canted to follow the curve of the road. The northwest elevation includes two casement windows at different levels, with the lower window previously having an arched shape. Above these, there is one arched casement window and one flat-headed casement window. A wooden porch is located on the south gable wall. There is a 20th-century addition to the north and a blocked ogee-headed door facing the road. The cottage is included in the register for its group value only.
