Description

The Nettleton Monument, located approximately 5 metres southeast of the Church of St. Michael and Our Lady, is a tomb chest dating from around 1707. It commemorates Elizabeth, the wife of George Nettleton, who died in 1707. The monument is made of sandstone and features plain slab sides. Its rectangular lid has a broad guilloche border that encloses a moulded semi-circular head adorned with winged angel heads in the spandrels. The inscription is in elegant serif lettering, starting with a raised decorated initial "H" set in a sunk panel. An addition to the monument commemorates George Nettleton, who died in 1719.
