Description
Milnthorpe Grange is a complex house consisting of three sections with some later additions, built from coursed, squared stone. The north-west part dates from around 1700 and is two storeys high with two bays, featuring low proportions and a steeply pitched roof made of large stone flags. To the south-west is a parallel range that forms an L-shape running north-eastwards, which has a datestone from 1749 but has undergone alterations. The main front has two wide bays with later 19th-century sash windows set in raised surrounds. The roof is hipped to the right around the L-shape.
The space between these two ranges has been covered to create a passage, and a pent porch has been added to the north-west side. The north-east wing, added around 1800, features sash windows with glazing bars, arranged in four and five panes wide, within plain reveals. This wing has a flagged roof with a lower pitch. It connects to an outbuilding from the early to mid-19th century, constructed with similar materials. Inside, there are many exposed beams, including one room that has a chamfered beam and joists. The house also contains a simple 18th-century staircase with turned balusters and a cut string.
