Description
Milnthorpe House is a house of three builds with small later additions and alterations, primarily constructed of coursed squared stone. The northeast part dates from the late 17th century, featuring a heavy king post roof with two levels of purlins and a ridge piece. The rooms in this section have ceilings divided into panels by deep moulded cornices and borders, and there are Yorkshire sash windows. The central section is from the late 18th century or early 19th century.
Inside, there is a staircase with stone treads, two slender turned balusters on each side, and a ramped handrail that curves around to the newel. The dado has a dentilled rail. An arch over the hall is supported by fluted pilasters and features imposts with paterae and an architrave. The house also includes a barrel-vaulted brick cellar with dairy slabs.
The front range has a mid-19th century appearance, is two stories tall, and has three windows. It is built of ashlar with a fairly high-pitched stone flagged roof, gable copings, and kneelers. The returns are made of snecked rubble, and there is an eaves cornice and blocking course. Two-storey canted bays flank the central door, which is set in a prostyle porch supported by slender cast iron columns.
