Description
Walnut Cottage is a building dating from the late 17th century or early 18th century, which has been refenestrated and possibly refronted in the early to mid-19th century. The house has undergone subsequent alterations to the roof, likely changing its pitch. It stands two storeys high with three slightly irregular windows. The exterior is made of coursed, squared stones, topped with a fairly high-pitched stone flagged roof featuring wide copings and kneelers, along with central and end stacks. The original sash windows have been replaced with box frames that include glazing bars and added outer shutters. A modern bow has been inserted on the left side, and there is a modern stone porch. The building features heavy lintels.
Inside, there are three ground floor rooms: a hall with service and parlour ends, all showcasing original heavy beams with stop-chamfers and tongued stops, as well as original joists. A narrow staircase from around 1700 has a closed string. The roof structure includes very heavy principals with collars at two levels, and one level of through purlins that have been turned 90 degrees from their original position. It is possible that the roof once featured king posts, but it has been altered while still using original wood. The house was formerly an inn, and an old long settle remains as a fixture in the hall.
