Description

Sandal Castle is a historic site that was rebuilt in 1328 on the location of a Norman motte and bailey. To the north-west, there are the remains of the keep on the motte, which is largely demolished but features impressive masonry ruins. This keep is linked by an archer causeway to a barbican situated on a rocky outcrop that rises from an inner ditch surrounding the motte. To the south-east, an inner bailey is encircled by the remnants of buildings that form a shell keep. The castle became Crown Property in the mid-14th century.
